The 48th People’s Choice Awards were held on 6th December 2022 and aired live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on NBC and E! The ceremony was hosted by Saturday Night Live comedian Kenan Thompson who was also nominated for his work on SNL.
Nominees spanning 40 categories for film, television, music, and popular culture were announced on October 26th. Barb Bialkowski, Jesse Ignjatovic, and Evan Prager produced the show.

Shari Johnson, Lizzo's mother, introduced her daughter with the People's Champion Award and said before calling her onstage that Lizzo has shown everybody that people do not have to strictly adhere to anyone's benchmarks to be happy, innovative, and deserving. Shari stated that she understands Lizzo has saved many lives and that no one is more certainly worthy of the award than she and her daughter.
Lizzo hugged her mother and invited 17 activists on stage, trying to emphasize that being an icon it's not about how long they've had a platform, it's about what they do with it. She continued by stating that she has used her platform to intensify marginalized groups' opinions since she started her career, and tonight she is the ability to share the honor with the 17 incredible activists.
Mari Copeny, Yasmine Aker, Shirley Raines,Esther Young Lim, Jayla Rose Sullivan, Crystal Echo Hawk, Emiliana Guereca, Felicia "Fe" Montes, Tamika Palmer, Reshma Saujani, Kara Roselle Smith, Odilia Romero, Tarlan Rabizadeh, Maggie Mireles Thomas, Amelia Bonow, Sahar Pirzada, and Chandi Moore were all introduced by the singer. The singer, who also earned the Song of 2022 award, was recognized for her breakthrough contributions to music and television, as well as her dedication to lauding overall inclusivity and diversity across racial groups, sexual identities, sexual orientations, and sizes.
In a statement, Cassandra Tryon, SVP of Entertainment Live Event, NBCUniversal Television, and Streaming, said that Lizzo is not only an extremely talented entertainer and pioneering entertainer, but she is also a good influence and encouragement to fans all over the world. She added that Lizzo is a compassionate leader who promotes inclusion and diversity and encourages increased diversity and equity in the industry and beyond. Her dedication to removing obstacles and empowering others to utilize their perspectives to effect change distinguishes her as a true 'People's Champion.'
