75th British Academy Film Awards; 'The Power of the Dog' wins Best Film

The 75th British Academy Film Awards was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday i.e. 13th March 2022. The British Academy of Film and Television acknowledged the greatest national and international films and artists of 2021 on Sunday, with Rebel Wilson serving as the evening's host.

Jane Campion who won the award for best director along with best film for her movie ‘The Power of the Dog' was not present at the ceremony to accept the award but the leading actor of the movie Benedict Cumberbatch, accepted the award on behalf of the director. The actor who was nominated for Best Actor award lost the award to Will Smith for his performance in King Richard and Benedict Cumberbatch joked about loosing to Will Smith by stating that you don't loose to Will Smith, you win being in his company which has captured the attention of the audience as they have mentioned that Benedict is an epitome of  Pure Class!

Director of King Richard, Reinaldo Marcus Green accepted the award on behalf of Will Smith and mentioned that the award is a tremendous honor and Will Smith must be grateful for the award. He mentioned that the moment Will Smith stepped into the shoes of Richard Williams, the movie became personal to him and he'd be very thankful to the Williams Family for allowing them to share their story with everyone. Reinaldo also went ahead to thank the people who were involved in the project along with thanking the fellow actors who were nominated in the same category. 

The ceremony started with BAFTA chairman Krishnendu Majumdar paying tribute and homage to the people of Ukraine and everyone who is working day and night to cover the war for the public. Many of those journalists and people covering the war are members of the British Academy of Film and Television. Another highlight of the night worth mentioning is iconic Shirley Bassey starting off the night with her song ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ from James Bond movie.

As Prince William delivered a virtual speech in which he mentioned that, as the President of BAFTA, he is extremely proud to see that the British Academy of Film and Television works year-round to provide opportunities and support for artists. Prince William added that one of those programs is Breakthrough, which is a year-long mentoring and guidance initiative that helps people achieve their true potential.

He continued that he feels immensely proud that there are more than 30 participants from Breakthrough U.K. present in the audience, referring to Aleem Khan and Jessie Buckley, who were nominated for the awards. Finally, he congratulated everyone who was nominated and the winners.
