Samuel L. Jackson was presented with an Honorary Academy Award by longtime friend Denzel Washington at the Governors' Awards on Friday, which was not broadcast on television. This was Samuel L. Jackson’s first Oscar, and he was thrilled to receive it from a friend. On accepting the honor, the Pulp Fiction actor said that he and Denzel have come a long way and done a lot of things, and he’s very honored and feels proud to receive the award.

Samuel went ahead to thank the governors for recognizing his work and mentioned that who would have thought that a little kid from Chattanooga, Tennessee would stand here and say that I deserve something like this? The actor recalled his lesser-known roles and said that whenever he got the opportunity, he tried to represent the business in the best way possible and thanked his wife and daughter for their unconditional love and support throughout the years. Samuel added that he goes out there to entertain the audience the way Hollywood has entertained him and helped him escape his life for a few hours.

The actor concluded his speech by thanking everyone who has been a part of his journey, every fan who purchased a ticket for his movie, and adding that it has been an honor for him to receive the award. The Pulp Fiction co-stars Uma Thurman and John Travolta presented the award for Best Actor at the ceremony in Dolby Theatre, and while Uma and John showed off their dance moves, Samuel L. Jackson stood by the podium and joked that some actors never leave their characters. He also joked that Pulp Fiction was a masterpiece, but these two thought that the movie was about a dance contest.

During the award ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science paid tribute to The Godfather, and actors including Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and director Francis Ford Coppola appeared on stage to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movie. Francis Ford Coppola took the stage and said that he was grateful to his friends for coming here and helping him celebrate his movie that began 50 years ago. He thanked all the people who were involved in the project and went ahead to mention a special thank you to Mario Puzo, the author of the Godfather novels, and Robert Evans, the late producer of the movie.
