Zendaya and Andrew Garfield talk about Spider-Man: No Way Home and Euphoria.

In a recent interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Zendaya and Andrew Garfield appeared together and spoke about Spider-Man: No Way Home in which they appeared together and HBO Max's 'Euphoria' in which Zendaya stars as Rue Bennett who is a drug addict. Zendaya shared that Tom Holland was very nervous about the fact that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were coming in for a special appearance in the Marvel movie.

The actress said that Tom was intimated by the previous Spider-Men reprising their roles and said that Tom Holland told her that he did not want to step on anyone’s toes. On hearing this confession, Andrew Garfield, said that he did not sense any nervousness coming from Tom Holland while filming and added that Tobey Maguire and he were clear that Spider-Man: No Way Home was Tom Holland’s movie, their movie, so they were not going to do anything extra but added that it was really funny that everyone would just come and hang out with them at rehearsal and he said all he could think was why was everyone else there.

Zendaya revealed that they all showed up at rehearsals to support Tom Holland, which Andrew regarded as a sweet gesture, and she added that people don’t know how much fun they have on set while filming and how much they love their job. Andrew Garfield remarked that it was pretty evident that they love their job and how much fun they had on sets.

Andrew Garfield also applauded Zendaya for her outstanding performance in 'Euphoria,' saying that the cast and crew had done a great job. Andrew went ahead to describe Sam Levinson as brilliant creator, showrunner, and director extraordinaire who made a fantastic show. Andrew went on to say that especially season two episode five was one of the most unrelenting television episodes he has ever seen, describing what it was like to have access to that type of abysmal news, devastation, and anguish, and to make it so real. He questioned whether she was well and how she kept herself safe during filming, to which Zendaya replied that it was difficult. She went on to say that when that episode first aired, a lot of people reached out to her to see how she was doing which she really appreciated.

Zendaya went on to say that she doesn't have a specific technique for playing that role, but that she has had the opportunity of playing Rue for a long time and has learned the luxury of living in her skin for some time which makes it a little easy for her. Zendaya also discussed her tight relationship with Sam, which she characterized as "huge" because Rue is heavily based on him as an adolescent. Rue has evolved into a combination of her, his, and their combined anguish, as well as seeing through the eyes of an addict, as Zendaya noted. She explained that she her approach for Rue and what they show on-screen has always been to make it as human as possible without ever shying away from the showcasing how devastated and ugly things could go. The actress added that she was terrified to shoot that episode because it had been written for a long time before the pandemic, and she was dreading having to do it. Zendaya noted during the interview that she is extremely protective of Rue because of all the people she represents, and she recognizes that the world will not always be as kind to her as she is, but it's difficult for her.

Andrew also complimented Zendaya for the song ‘I am Tired’ which she co-wrote and sang with Labrinth. After talking about their process of acting, Zendaya mentioned that her being in service of other people’s healing through her work means that what she is doing makes sense and she stated that taking Spider-Man, the amount of joy that movie brought to people is so cool and added that to see all three Spider-Men have a moment was special for everyone and it had an impact on so many people. Andrew went on to say that it's all about brotherhood, and he adores the idea that Tom Holland's Peter might have met the same fate as Andrew Garfield's Peter if Andrew hadn't somehow entered that universe and learned from his older brother's mistakes, ensuring that his younger brother and his love didn't meet the same fate.
