The Bachelorette star Katie Thurston (30) has had a thrilling few days. She was heartbroken when Greg Grippo (28) abruptly quit the show shortly after Thurston got to know his family.Everything seemed to be going well after their meeting, especially when Grippo said that he hadn’t been this happy for a long time before speaking out about his father’s death.Things changed after Grippo said he was in love and wanted to marry her.

Grippo didn't like that.

Although I wanted to tell you that I loved you, I felt like I was saying it to someone else. Thurston was told the next day by him.And that night here, I thought I was expressing my love for my future wife, but you didn't feel it." It was completely ignored in my eyes."Thurston, who was making a promise to herself at the start of the season that she wouldn't tell any bachelors she loves them until the end of the episode, is a context. She explained this to him. Instead, she chose to use an alternative language.

However, this didn't seem enough.

He later said to her, "I don’t care about the rose," and implied that he was ending his relationship with her.

Grippo ended the argument by leaving the room and leaving Thurston alone on the bathroom floor -- crying and confused. Thurston posted a message to Grippo on Instagram the next day.

Thurston shared a post on Instagram that explained the history and definitions of gaslighting.

What is gas lighting?

Psychology Today defines gaslighting as "an insidious method of manipulation and psychological control.Gaslighting victims are given false information "deliberately" and "systemically" that makes them doubt their reality or live experiences.

This term was first used in 1938's Gas Light, as well as subsequent 1940 and 1944 film adaptations. The film depicts an abusive husband who altered the lighting to make his wife lose her vision.

He "gaslighted" her, convincing her that she was imagining the lights flickering. This led to her doubting herself. Everyone was beginning to question her sanity by the end of the movie. If someone moves something from your table and you ask them why it is called gaslighting.Dr. Jack Rozel is the medical director for emergency psychiatry at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. He explains that another example is when you bring up a past situation, and someone says, "That never happened." You exaggerate again.

This is a form of gaslighting. They also lead you down a path of self-doubt, regardless of whether they realize it. This kind of abuse can lead to a vicious cycle that leaves you feeling self-doubtful and difficult to break.Rozel told Yahoo Life that these behaviors can be considered abusive and mean at best. They can also be very traumatic and dangerous at worst.

Gaslighting can occur anywhere, including at work, home, with your family, or on social media.

Rozel says that the same strategy of "reality denial" is used in indoctrination. It was also used with extremists, cults and was well-described as a brainwashing’ technique used in a regime of torture on U.S prisoners of war during this century.
