In a recent cover story for Teen Vogue, second-generation Mexican-American pop singer Becky G shared that she always had one thing on her mind, which was to provide for her family.
The singer recalled how embarrassing it was to have her lunch taken away because she was in debt. She explained that her family had lost their home in the 2008 financial crisis, her parents were broke, and the kids had to check "homeless" on their lunch applications. The family had to relocate into her grandparents' garage, according to Becky.
At the age of 15, Becky G had been providing for the family as she had managed to book acting roles, have her YouTube channel and a record deal with Dr. Luke, and then came her hit single ‘Shower’. She recalled during the interview that at the age of 9, she wanted to make money but all she could do was sell chocolate bars at school, which was not going to provide her with money.
Becky G said that she still doesn't know what her drive was all about at the time but stated that she still tries to figure it out and unpack it in therapy, but it was out of necessity. She talked about the single that skyrocketed her career. She said that it was not written for her but a white pop star, but she always knew that the song was bigger than her and she was lucky that the song landed in her lap. The singer said that it took her to so many places.
The musician said that the business standard contracts looked a specific way when she had signed them and they look different today. Becky G added that young hustlers like her don't comprehend it, thus and mentioned that because if it meant that she will be able to support her family, she will do anything one can ask of her, including a climb up a mountain, perform five spins, clap three times, and perform two jumping jacks.
The singer acknwoledged that she is thankful that she can speak another language since she felt like she was bound to a sinking ship in her previous employment. And it's horrifying to consider that this is it at 18–19 years old. The endeavor to which one has to devote their entire life has come to an end.
Becky G discussed pursuing music as a career in a 2017 interview with the Rolling Stones, saying that she didn't know she wanted to pursue music as a career till she was 9 which is crazy since it's still incredibly young. The singer explained that she had a midlife crisis at the age of nine and had realized then that she needed to organize her life. The questionw as how was she going to proceed?Because her family had just lost their home, she had put more pressure on herself than the usual child at a young age.
She claimed that the pressure made her sing, and when she did, she discovered that she was talented and thought, "Why not go into entertainment?" According to Becky G, she has always enjoyed making people laugh and being quite loud. Once she had made up her mind, she talked to her parents about her desire to pursue music and told them that she needed six months before they could get her an agency and management.
Now that her career is moving at full speed, Becky G claimed that she is making space for "spontaneity" so that she may feel "inspired by life again."
