British actor Claire Foy who essayed the role of 'Queen Elizabeth II' on Netflix's "The Crown" is all set to portray the role of Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's COO in the upcoming scripted series 'Doomsday Machine'. The scripted series about Facebook executives is based on Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang's 'An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook's Battle for Domination' book, which is a New York Times best-selling book. The book was published by Harper, an imprint of Harper Collins, released in July 2021.

The series based on the book will focus on the relationship between the social media giant's founder Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, who serves as the Company's Chief Officer (COO) of Facebook. The show is also going to focus on the obstacles the social media platform had to face to grow to be at the top.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author Ayad Akhtar are writing the show and a couple of journalists are contacted to be a part of the process as the consultants for the show to maintain the accuracy of the plot written for the audience. Anonymous Content's AC Studios and Wiip are producing the show.

According to sources, that makers decided to go ahead with the show to make the audience understand the point of view of Mark and Sheryl as they face many ups and down in making Facebook topping the list of platform that connects people across the world.

"Doomsday Machine", will take the viewers five years back at the social media giant, beginning with disinformation surrounding the 2016 election and leading up to recent revelations in The Wall Street Journal and the Times about Facebook running a program called, check, which has allowed high-profile users including former President Donald Trump, to skirt its content moderation rules. The show will also focus on how the company was aware of the mental health risks posed by Instagram to younger users and the push by Mark Zuckerberg to use news feed as his propaganda machine to push out articles with positive slants about Facebook.

The announcement of 'Doomsday Machine' comes after the testimony of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen who urged lawmakers to impose tougher regulations on the social media giant. This also comes after the company went through an hours-long outage on 4th October which left the users unable to access Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The result of that event, lead to renewed calls from American lawmakers, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to break the company up into smaller entities.

'Doomsday Machine' is not the first attempt by the industry to take a closer look at the life of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook to be precise, previously Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg in 'The Social Network'. The movie traced down the path of the onset of Facebook. The social network did not feature any character named Sheryl Sandberg.
