Singer Demi Lovato is taking a whole new approach towards sobriety and ditching her old approach.

Demi Lovato has always been open and candidly talked about their struggle with substance abuse, and in their recent documentary for YouTube originals, "Dancing with the Devil," they recalled and spoke about the overdose they faced in 2018, which led them to have a heart attack, multiple strokes, and temporary blindness.

In a recent post, the singer said that they are no longer choosing to be "California Sober" anymore, but only "sober sober". In the post they wrote, "I no longer support my 'California Sober' ways. Sober and sober is the only way to be. "In March, while speaking on CBS This Morning, the singer said, "I think that the term that I best identify with is "California sober." I really don't feel comfortable explaining the perimeters of my recovery with people, because I don't want anyone to look at my perimeters of safety and think that's what works for them, because it might not. "

For the unknown, California Sober means that an individual has to abstain from all substances, including alcohol, except marijuana (it is legal in California). But sober sober means that an individual is going to stay strictly sober. Demi’s announcement of being "sober sober" and not "California sober" comes a day after they marked their friend Thomas Trussell III’s birthday, who passed away in 2019 due to a drug overdose.

They wrote in their post, "You're unforgettable. We miss and love you. I mean, how gorgeous is @sirtruss? " In their documentary series, the singer shared with the world their approach towards sobriety and said, "I've learned that shutting a door on things makes me want to open the door even more. I've learned that it doesn't work for me to say, "I'm never going to do this again." Demi added that they surely had some protocols in place to help prevent them from relapsing on hard drugs.

They said at the time, "Telling myself I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana is setting myself up for failure because I am such a black-and-white thinker. I had it drilled into my head for so many years that one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe. " In the documentary series, the singer mentioned that they are done with the stuff that is going to land them on the hospital bed again, but revealed that they still smoke weed and have a drink occasionally.

Clarifying their act about smoking weed and drinking occasionally, Demi Lovato added, "I also don't want people to hear that and think they could just try having a drink or smoking a joint because it isn't for everyone." Recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. You shouldn’t be forced to get sober if you're not ready. You shouldn't get sobered up for other people. Furthermore, you have to do it for yourself".

In March, Demi Lovato spoke with Entertainment Weekly about their approach toward sobriety and shared that the approach has been working for them for over the past two years, but their point is just that it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Demi Lovato’s California Sober approach towards sobriety has been criticized by a lot of people in the past, and one of them was Lala Kent, who shared, "I don't like to judge, but I actually think that that's super offensive. You know, there are people out there who work their ass off to never take themselves out of reality and to never place themselves in an altered state. You know, they don't even, when they have a cold, take DayQuil or NyQuil. So to say that you're, like, "California sober" or this type of sober is extremely offensive, I think. To me, I've been in rooms with men and women who have given up everything just to not pick up [substances]. Sober, to me, means that you are not taking yourself out of reality. "

The legendary singer, Elton John, also said, "Moderation doesn't work. If you drink, you're going to drink more; if you take a pill, you're going to take another one. You either do it or you don't. "
