The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and were televised live on NBC and Peacock. On December 12, 2022, the nominations were announced.
Following internal changes that have been made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the award ceremony has decided to return to NBC since being taken off the air amid scandal over the manque of diversity between its former voting body. Jerrod Carmichael, the comedian who hosted the ceremony on Tuesday, didn't hold back.
Jerrod Carmichael began the ceremony began with a roast, and he stated that he was there to tell the audience why he was there: he was black. He continued by explaining that the Golden Globe Awards did not air the year before due to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which he explained he would still not call a racist organization but did not include a single black member until George Floyd passed away in an unfortunate way, and stated that they can do whatever they wanted with that knowledge.
The host continued by explaining how he responded to being asked to present the show by Stephen Hill, saying that he tried to tell him he was just being asked because he was black, to which Stephen Hill answered that he had been asked because he is skilled, charismatic, and one of the greatest comedians of his generation. Jerrod stated that he will be totally honest with everybody in the audience about the reality that he took the task presuming that nothing has changed, but he has even learned that they currently have six black members, which he appreciated but said is not the reason why he was there.
Jerrod went on to say that he was there because of everyone in the audience, because of the talented people he admires and aspires to be like. He stated that he is there because of the people he envies, who are incredible artists, and that regardless of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's past, the evening is where they all celebrate the amazing, talented people, and that the industry deserves evenings like these.

Steven Spielberg won the award for Best Director for his autobiographical drama, The Fabelmans and while accepting the award he said that he had been hesitant to share his most personal story on-screen but it took a little bit of bravery for him to finally put it out. He said everything he has done up to this point has made him ready to finally be honest about the fact that it's not easy to be a kid and added that everyone sees him as a success story but nobody knows who they are real until they are courageous enough to share it with people.
The director continued that he has spent a lot of time trying to figure out when was the right time to tell that story and when he turned 74, he felt like maybe he should do it and concluded that he is really happy that he did it.
Congratulations to the winners!
