Henry Cavill is hanging up his cape.

Actor Henry Cavill, who announced back in October that he would be returning to the DC Extended Universe as Superman, took to his social media on Wednesday to announce that he will no longer be returning as Superman.

Henry shared in a post that after he had a meeting with filmmaker James Gunn and British film producer Peter Safran, a decision was made that he won’t be returning as Superman in the DCEU. James Gunn and producer Peter Safran were named co-chairmen and chief executive officers of DC Studios in October.

The actor went on to say that the decision was made after James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired, and that he was told by the studio to announce his return in October, which was before they were hired, and that the news has not been easy to share. Henry mentioned that the changing of the guard is something that happens, and he respects that. The 39-year-old actor stated that, while he will not be returning to his role as Superman, the superhero, all of it he stands for, and the instances he sets for people will remain.

Henry Cavill indicated that his time in the cape is over, however the values that Superman symbolizes will live on, adding that it has been a fun ride with everybody else, from then until upwards. Henry Cavill, who appeared in the closing scene of Black Adam, revealed his return as Superman in October by publishing that the dawn of hope had been renewed.

The actor later shared a video with fans, explaining that he wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting the video so that everyone could watch Black Adam. He added at the time that now that the film has been seen by a large number of people, he wanted to make it official that he is back as Superman. In the video at the time, Henry Cavill stated that the image people see on this post and what they saw in Black Adam is only a small taste of what is to come. There's a lot to be thankful for, and he'll get to it eventually, but he wanted to thank everyone first and foremost, acknowledge the support, and appreciate people for their compassion, having promised that it will be rewarded.

Later, filmmaker James Gunn took to social media to announce that he and producer Peter Safran are working on a DC slate. James wrote that he and Peter Safran have a DC slate fully prepared to go, which they are overjoyed regarding, and that they hope to be able to reveal some exciting details about their first project at the start of the new year. James Gunn continued by stating that they have a different notion for the story and that one of those new slates is Superman, which is currently in the early stages, and the story will revolve around Superman's early years, so actor Henry Cavill will not play the character.

The filmmaker added that there is still hope, saying that they had a good conversation with Henry Cavill, that they're big fans, and that they had talked about several exciting possibilities for possible future collaborations. While responding to some of the fans' queries, James also teased the prospect of Ben Affleck, who notably played Batman in the DCEU, has returned behind the camera. He also asserted that he is not certain who will direct the Superman film for the time being, but he is drafting it.

Henry Cavill made his on-screen debut as the DC Superhero, Superman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" in 2013. In 2016's "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" and 2017's "Justice League," the actor reprised his role as Superman. Henry Cavill's departure as Superman is another huge departure for the cherished actor, who also announced his exit from the Netflix series The Witcher after three seasons as the lead. Actor Liam Hemsworth was revealed to be carrying on the role as the lead after Henry Cavill's exit.
