The 2021 Emmys were a highly anticipated event after last year's low-key virtual event. With actual awards and glorious red carpet outfits, this year's award show was a true hit.

The nominations for the awards had rolled in July, with hit series like Ted Lasso, The Queen's Gambit, The Crown, and The Mandalorian sweeping up a lot of nominations.

Women making history

Women TV directors were particularly magnificent this year with series like The Crown and Hacks, and their Emmy wins stand witness to their excellence. Jessica Hobbs, director of The Crown, won the best director of a drama series. Lucia Aniello won the same title but for her comedy series, Hacks, marking this the first year for two women to have won the titles together.

Director Aileen O'Sullivan's daughter, Hobbs, is the fourth woman in the Emmys' history to stand holding the award for outstanding directing of a drama series.

Exclaiming her gratitude for winning the award, she said, "Not a lot of women have won this award, so I feel I'm standing on the shoulders of some really extraordinary people. I'm very grateful for the path they led, and I particularly would like to pay tribute to my mom, who at 77 is still directing."

Aniello, too, made history by being the fifth woman to hold the outstanding directing of a comedy series, Emmys.

Michaela Coel too made history by being the first black woman to win the award for best writing in a limited series for her series I May Destroy You, which she also stars in.

Both HBO and Netflix were in a hard race vowing for awards with only a single nomination difference. Ultimately, Netflix emerged the winner this year despite being back by one nomination and took 10 awards to its name.

HBO is just a single step behind, with nine wins this year. However, in the collective history of Emmys, HBO stands first with 130 awards in total. This year another streaming network that did well is Disney+, having 14 collective wins in Creative Arts Emmys and Sunday's Primetime Emmy Awards. AppleTV+ scored 10, NBC took 8, and VH1 took home 6 awards. Netflix still stands winner with 44 collectively won awards.

Netflix's original limited series The Queen's Gambit made big this year by winning Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Other series that vouched for the same position were "I May Destroy You," "Mare of Easttown," "The Underground Railroad," and "WandaVision."

Netflix also made a major hit with The Crown for the Outstanding Drama Series, leaving behind Amazon Prime's The Boys and Disney's The Mandalorian.

HBO made big wins with Hacks and The Mare of Easttown, winning the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The award was won by Kate Winslet.
