Netflix and Apple TV + shows “The Crown” and “Ted Lasso” rule the 73rd Emmy Awards.

The talk of the night at the Emmy awards was the period drama “The Crown.” A Netflix series based on the reign of Queen Elizabeth ll, produced by Song pictures and Left bank pictures and written by Peter Morgan.

The Crown was nominated in eleven categories and won seven awards, including the award for the Outstanding drama series and the award for lead actress (Olivia Colman) and lead actor (Josh O’Connor) in a drama series.

Apple TV + show “Ted Lasso” was also nominated in fifteen categories and won four of them. Actor Jason Sudeikis, who plays the role of “Ted Lasso” was nominated for the first time and won the award for the best actor in a comedy series.

Sudeikis mentions how the show “Ted Lasso” is about family. About mentors and teachers and also about teammates. He gave credit to all the teachers, mentors, and family for being where he is today.

The streaming giant ruled the charts at the award night, with two of its shows having big wins. “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” both won eleven awards each.

The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-joy was in the spotlight at the awards after William Horberg, the Executive producer of the show mentioned in his acceptance speech. Anya Taylor-joy portrayed the character of Beth Harmon a chess prodigy who is addicted and struggling to become the greatest chess player in the world.

He said the actress has inspired a whole generation of women and girls to learn that patriarchy cannot stand in front of our Queen.

Colman and O’Connor, who plays the fictional mother and son, won the award for their character. Colman plays the role of Queen Elizabeth II, while O’Connor plays the son of Prince Charles in the royal drama.

Colman had to cut her speech as she got emotional during it, she lost her father to COVID and he would have loved to see her winning the award.

O’Connor mentioned Emma Corrin in his speech, Emma played Princess Diana in the nominated drama series. Corrin was also nominated on Sunday and was called the “force of nature” by O’Connor.

O’Connor thanked his grandmother, who passed away a few months ago, and his grandfather for all the kindness and loyalty.

The Award night was a refreshing change after having most of the ceremonies online last year due to the ongoing pandemic. Emmy Awards were organized at the Event Deck at LA Live, an indoor-outdoor venue. The event took place in an open space for fear of the delta variant of COVID.
