Nia DaCosta, who serves as the director of Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero film, has shared her views on the fan-favorite superhero characters Batman and Superman. The Little Woods director DaCosta said while discussing the Man of Steel and Dark Knight, "no matter how much power you have, you never really have control over yourself."

While speaking to Inverse, DaCosta was asked by interviewer Roxane Gay how she defined a hero. She answered, "Someone who's trying their best with the information and resources and tools they have at the time, They'll always get it wrong. Heroes are complicated in a real-world sense because they are basically vigilantes; they don't have any oversight. Half the time no one's even asking for their help. It's tricky in that way, but integrity is a big part of it, choosing to put others before yourself, that sort of thing."

DaCosta added that something she had always found interesting in characters like Man of Steel and Dark Knight is that "their power is equal to their pain." "In terms of the most successful heroes, no matter how much power you have, you never really have control over yourself," DaCosta concluded. "That's something you see in characters like Magneto, for example. His emotional life is always going to overpower his actual power."

While the plot details of her upcoming film The Marvels is currently missing but DaCosta in the same interview also touched upon the film by explaining that the audience is going to see more of the human side of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in the much-awaited film as opposed to what they saw in its predecessor Captain Marvel, released in 2019. "For The Marvels, my biggest thing going into it was making sure I approached these characters as human beings and not necessarily as superheroes," DaCosta stated. "I want to know more about Captain Marvel. Who is she? What are her fears? What drives her? How do you actually deal with being the most powerful being in the universe? How does that weigh on you? That's the sort of thing I want to explore."

With DaCosta as the director of The Marvels, the film features Iman Vellani in the role of Kamala Khan also known as Ms. Marvel, Teyonah Parris in the role of Monica Rambeau,  Saagar Shaikh in the role of Khan's older brother Amir, Zenobia Shroff in the role of mother Muneeba, and Mohan Kapur in the role of father Yusuf, with Zawe Ashton as an undisclosed villain.

The development of the film began in January 2020. The 31-year-old filmmaker Nia DaCosta was hired as the film director in August of 2020, with later on in December Vellani and Parris revealed to be cast in the film. The filming of The Marvels started in August 2021, taking place in Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and in Tropea, Italy.

After a lot of delays due to the impact of Coronavirus Pandemic around the world because of which theaters had to be closed down, Marvel Studios The Marvels is scheduled to release on February 17, 2023.
