While the fans know that the 55-year-old Mexican superstar Salma Hayek will be featuring in the upcoming superhero epic The Eternals as Ajak, according to Hayek what they don't know is that the film director Chloe Zhao and the team working behind the screen just guided the actor for the film but it was ultimately left to her to give the superhero character Ajak a direction in the film.

"They start talking and it's such a big world and it gets scarier as it goes on. And she gave me some kind of idea of what I would be doing in the film, but not much. You don't know if that's done in three scenes, in four, or in one, Then I started saying, okay, so I said a couple of things coming out of my ignorance, an absolute sense of loss. I was lost in it, but that helped me go more quickly into the more human part of the characters because it was a complicated for me." Hayek revealed this during a press visit to the set of The Eternals in January of 2020.

Hayek then went directly to Marvel producer Nate Moore to begin asking questions to help flesh out her character. As the actor points out, she felt Ajak was better suited as a mother-like figure for the eponymous group of heroes.

"Could we not do it like the characters where the leader is like this? It's more like the mother is, a lot of the times, the leader of a family and when identified, she loved it. And there were a couple of things I got to be maybe ambitious and say, well, could I be the superhero for the environment," Hayek said.

Hayek went to say that every superhero movie is just about a superhero saving the earth but nobody is interested in making a superhero movie that centers on saving humanity, animals, and plants. "Because it's mother earth, and you have all these superheroes. They're always trying to save the earth in all the superheroes movies. Marvel, all of that, but then nobody was like, "Let's talk more about the earth we're saving. Can I love animals and plants and all the things about humanity, like music and food? And can I be the superhero that really wants to save all those things?"

With Salma Hayek joining Marvel Studios The Eternals in the role of Ajak, along with Angelina Jolie in the role of Thena, Brian Tyree Henry in the role of Phastos, Richard Madden in the role of Ikaris, Gemma Chan in the role of Sersi, Lauren Ridloff in the role of Makkari, Lia McHugh in the role of Sprite, Kumail Nanjiani in the role of Kingo, Barry Keoghan in the role of Druig, Don Lee in the role of Gilgamesh, Kit Harington in the role of Dane Whitman with additional actors including Harish Patel, Haaz Steiman as Phastos' husband, Ozer Ercan as a smuggler and Zain Al Rafeea in an unknown role, the film is centered around Eternals, a race of immortal beings who have been living secretly on Earth for thousands of years and now has the time come for them to unite together as evil forces such as the Deviants in the universe have once again risen, due to sudden influx of energy created by Thanos during the snap.
