Did you know that the original choice for Iron Man was Tom Cruise and not our favorite Robert Downery Jr. ? Believe it or not, Cruise had no faith in the franchise and thus decided to not do it. The role then steadily went to RDJ who created the most iconic role in the history of MCU.

MCU approached Cruise in 2010 when he was a hot favorite across the globe. With biggies like Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and Jerry McGuire, Cruise was a star everyone wanted in their franchise, especially if it was a multi-billion dollar franchise. In an interview, Cruise had confirmed that there were talks about playing iron Man, “It’s not happening. Not with me, no … They came to me at a certain point and, when I do something, I wanna do it right. If I commit to something, it has to be done in a way that I know it’s gonna be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn’t feel to me like it was gonna work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be, and it just didn’t go down that road that way.”

Recollecting the process of hiring for RDJ, in an interview for Rolling Stone, Jon Favreau (Director of the series plus Iron Man’s chauffeur Happy Hogan) stated that when Marvel was asked to hire Robert Downey Jr., their point-blank response was “under no circumstances are we prepared to hire him for any price.”

The director had then called the alcoholic, drug-addicted actor (who was also charged for possession of drugs) and told him, “I fought, I tried, I did what I could, it’s a pity and a shame, but unfortunately it’s going to stop here.” Downey, back then, was adamant. “With your permission, I’m going to hold out hope.”

And then we all are a part of history now. In fact, RDJ held on to the role with so much eerie likeness it was impossible to talk to anybody else.

When asked about the chances of return to the MCU as Iron Man Tony aka RDJ said “I’m not sure. Are we in bargaining now? I am so pleased, just that, I wound up where I have. I’m very fortunate so, I’m not the kind of guy who — I want to try to keep it classy. We’ll see,” he had said.
