Star Trek is a franchise that has managed to draw millions of fans for over years now. The original series follows Kirk as he frolics around the galaxy and has many adventures fighting evil forces across the scape. The franchise is now continuing into many other great series that you would love to watch as a fan.

One of the best Star Trek watches at the moment is the second Season of Star Trek: Picard. Directed by Akiva Goldsman, the series features the tale of Jean-Luc Picard. The character is portrayed by Patrick Stewart

Picard has managed to remain a secretive character for a while now, and fans wish to learn much about him. A lot about the character was not explored in the previous Star Trek production, The Next Generation.

Season 2 of Picard features the return of Q, played by John de Lancie and Guinan, played by Whoopi Goldberg. Hence, it is an excellent time for Jean-Luc to continue on with his space travel and adventures.

Recently, the Academy Award-winning director, Akiva Goldsman, shared what makes Star Trek: Picard such an interesting watch for the franchise fans. He was joined in his interview with Screen Rant by Terry Matalas, the showrunner of Picard.

The two together have created Picard and constructed many of the characters on the TV series. The two discussed what it was like to write and introduce new characters to the franchise and if Picard Season 3 will be the series finale.

The Season 2 of Picard is more like an insight into Picard himself with elements like time travel and much more to continue on the tale. The coming of Q and Guinan also helped change the narrative of the season and how it was presented.

The Picard season 2 has been distinctly unique until now, even as it explored more of the relationship of Q and Guinan. Though the two existing characters helped build an "emotional context" for the audience, the creators employed their own storytelling and managed to stay authentic to its creation.

The return of Q has brought about an external portrayal of Picard's much secret and internalized journey. While the character was mostly limited to himself in the past, Q helped raise the curtain and allowed the audience to see a little more into his being.

On the other hand, Guinan has managed to extend the story as the character happens to be someone "that triggers a journey." Guinan has been privy to the hidden struggles of Picard, and hence it aided in bringing his trauma into the light.

Guinan also possesses the ability of "cross-temporal awareness," a skill that came in handy during the time travel arc of Season 2. Hence, it was more than necessary to introduce those two characters into the Star Trek series again, and hence, adds to the charm of the storytelling.

But it is not only the "legacy characters" of the show that make Star Trek: Picard a great watch. The director and showrunner spent some time writing new characters for the show, and they fit right into the franchise.

Akiva Goldsman shared that it was amazing to write the new characters, especially Dr. Agnes Jurati and that she "really dug all of them." She particularly enjoyed writing the episode 2 speech for Allison Pill when the character is trying not to call Seven, Jeri Rayan, by his name.

The director is very taken with the new characters and their personalities. She seems to like Alison the most and claims that it is fun to write words for the character as she can give speeches for pages at a time.

Yet, Star Trek can not escape its history, and it weighs down heavily on its characters. Though Q brings on a freshness into the series, the show owes it to the character to show them in varied perspectives as from their previous appearances to show that the character has changed due to all the experience with time.

Q lives a complex life, and not much of it comes without its own baggage that the character would carry for the time to come. The character showed distinction to his previous portrayals as he played a role that stands true only for his Star Trek: Picard-self. The added layers to the characters help add "weight" to the story.

Now that you are sufficiently convinced to watch Picard, Goldsman also affirmed a piece of good news, saying that Picard season 3 is almost done with its shooting. But sadly, the creators have decided that season three will be the series finale.  Yet, there are hopes for the series to extend if the creators decide so.

Even if the series does come to an end sooner rather than later, Goldsman believes that continuing with these characters, for the time being, is an experience of "joy" in itself. Star Trek: Picard experimented with different aspects of Picard's life like his love life.

"There seems to be an interesting absence of durable romantic connections," said Goldsman. Hence, the series explored the idea and brought forward answers.

It would be interesting to see the series continue, yet it is still a great watch at present.
