John Legend gets candid about ending his friendship with Kanye West.

John Legend, during an appearance on The Axe Files podcast with CNN’s David Axelrod, spoke about why the friendship between him and Kanye West ended. John said that it was because they publicly disagreed on Kanye West’s decision to run for office, supporting former President of the United States Donald Trump, and stated that it became too much for them to sustain their friendship.

Kanye West, at the time, did raise eyebrows when he showcased his support for the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, by publicly donning his signature MAGA hat and meeting him in the Oval Office. John Legend was among a long list of celebrities who criticized the former President of the United States, and John Legend said that his refusal to support Kanye West did not sit right with the rapper.

John Legend explained that Kanye West was upset that he did not showcase his support for his run for the presidency of the United States of America for understandable reasons and mentioned that he was not alone in that, but Kanye West was not happy about it, and since then they haven’t been close.

John Legend, who is now expecting his third child with his wife Chrissy Teigen, and the couple recently announced on social media, stated during the podcast that Kanye West is upfront and genuine with his opinions, challenges, and everything that he is dealing with, which he truly admires. John added that Kanye has been very open with who he is and his challenges with mental health, and he is very real and honest about it, which is why the musician thinks that there are times when people don’t get Kanye West. John also mentioned that, according to him, what one witness with him is pretty much what they get.

Speaking about his interest in politics, John Legend said that he is not interested in running for any sort of office and would love to try to make a change where he can through his charitable efforts and, of course, with the power of music. He clarified that he does not see himself wanting to run for office even in the future and would love to impact the world with what he does the best, which is music.

Kanye West and John Legend have a long history of being friends, and Kanye was even listed as a producer on John Legend’s debut album, "Get Lifted," which was released in 2004. The two of them maintained their friendship over the years as they supported each other until Kanye West showcased his support for Donald Trump. Maybe they aren’t close like before, but John Legend said that he respects Kanye West and his art.

John Legend had previously tried to mend things between the two of them as he texted Ye when he was seen wearing a MAGA hat in 2018 and said that he should not let this be a part of his legacy and called him the greatest artist of his generation. Kanye West, in return, replied that he loves him and appreciates his thoughts, but him bringing up his fans or legacy is a tactic based on the fear used to manipulate his free thought. Kanye West also posted the screenshot of John Legend’s text message on social media.
