Why was the premiere of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' emotional for the cast?

Black Panther cast pays tribute to Chadwick Boseman at the premiere and were emotional. 

The premiere of Marvel Cinematic’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was held at the Dolby Theatre on Wednesday, where the entire cast of the movie paid tribute to the late actor and original Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman.

Director Ryan Coogler spoke to Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner and shared that he was wearing white at the premiere to honor Chadwick Boseman, who played King T'Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther, in the first movie. Ryan mentioned that it’s in honor of him and also in celebration of all that Chadwick Boseman did for everyone, adding that it works both ways.

Ryan further shared asking how he wanted to carry his legacy while making the sequel that when someone experiences something that sudden, it’s traumatic and they go through a lot of thoughts and emotions at the time. The director referred to the thought where he spoke about stepping away from Hollywood after Chadwick Boseman’s sudden passing away in August 2020 and explained that he felt more and thought more and thought more about Chadwick and how he lived his life and that is how he decided to keep going. Ryan, who shared a deep bond with the late actor, stated that he now knows that Chadwick wouldn’t have wanted them to stop.

In talking about gaining strength to come back on sets and work for the sequel, Ryan Coogler said that he was blessed that he met a person like Chadwick Boseman, adding that people like him do not come along often and he was just blessed to spend a whole lot of time with him. When it comes to working on the movie, he just reflected on their time together. Things like how it was to work with him, looking back at pictures and videos of them together, thinking about the conversations the two of them had, and everything that he shared with the late actor gave him the motivation and the push to get back to work, especially directing the sequel.

He continued that once he was around the cast and everybody, they got the band back together, so to speak, and that was the only motivation he needed. He went on to praise the cast and crew, stating that everyone did fantastic work. Ryan Coogler has a medallion with Chadwick Boseman’s face on it and actress Angela Bassett shared that Ryan Coogler wears it every day, not just during the filming of the movie or now at the premiere, but every day, adding that he keeps him close to his heart.

Angela Bassett, who played the character of Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa’s mother in the movie, said that this is how they knew that Chadwick Boseman was with them throughout. She shared that they all loved him, everyone loved him, and they would honor him, adding that it was very important that they recognise him and they couldn’t do it without him. The actress went on to say that before they shot a single frame, they all gathered at his final resting place and said (she motioned upwards) his name to the sky, and they smiled, contributing that they'd been with his family and it was a happy moment.

The actress who plays King T’Challa’s mother said that it’s too painful but when they lean into the love they have for him, the respect, the regard, as a feeling person, as a person who knows that death is not the end. Angela mentioned that they knew that he was on the set with them every day, whispering and telling him to go on, do their best, and don’t get weary. Actress Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, King T’Challa’s sister in the movie, praised director-writer Ryan Coogler for the script for the sequel, adding that they are extremely proud of the way Ryan has brought a script that could honor Chadwick Boseman and King T’Challa.

Letitia Wright said that she is so proud of the way that they, as a family, the Wakandan family, have come together with all the love they have to bring the audience the second installment and mentioned that it’s hard without Chadwick Boseman. He should have been here. Last but not least, the actress stated that as long as he is looking down on them, they hope that the film makes him proud and that the audience is proud of it.

Letitia, while talking to Variety, added that she has seen some members of Chadwick Boseman's team and when they lock eyes they know how it feels and added that they are all taking a step away. The actress said that she sees her aunt locking her eyes with her and she is so proud, mentioning that it's very emotional and they are all just trying to hold it together.

Actress Lupita Nyong'o said that their story very much embraces the grief they are all feeling and because T'Challa is gone in the story, the real question at the heart of this story is how to move on after a tragedy, after loss, and that is what they needed. Danai Gurira added that Chadwick Boseman was the leader through the phenomenon that the first film became, so it feels grounded in him and rooted in the power of his spirit, leadership, and generosity.
