Zoë Kravitz is living her life on her own terms and is grateful!

Appearing for the cover story for Elle, Zoë Kravitz is opening up about her family and how people have assumed that she has got it easy just because of her last name. She got candid about her divorce from Karl Glusman and her upcoming solo album.

During the interview with the stunning and talented daughter of iconic rock star Lenny Kravitz and beauty Lisa Bonet, Zoë Kravitz shared, “There was a little bit of embarrassment around what came with my last name. People would always assume that if I got a job, it was because of that. That was hard. But I was incredibly privileged. I got an agent easily. I’m not going to pretend like it didn’t help me get into the room. But I had to remember that I work hard, and as a child, I was putting on performances in my grandparents’ house. And it had nothing to do with who my family was. It was because I loved it.”

Zoë Kravitz has mentioned in her a lot of her interviews that whatever she has done till today, is because she worked really hard for it and believed in herself. In her Elle interview, the actress once again mentions that over time she has only embraced the unique way she has been working and “wanting to prove not only to the world but to myself, that I deserve to take up space in the industry. I’m proud of where I come from. Now it’s nice to be in a space where I feel like when people ask me about my parents, I’m not like, ‘Let’s not talk about that.’ I’m like, ‘They’re awesome. I’m grateful to be their child. And I also am my own human being.’”

Zoë Kravitz is described as ‘genuine, unapologetic and not someone’s idea of who she should be’. The actress adds, “There’s a lot of beauty in surrendering to the fact that you have no idea what’s going on.” The actress, musician, writer, and now soon to be a director has always embraced her sense of fashion the way she wants and not the way society labels a woman to be dressed up as. Being the face of Saint Laurent since 2017, Zoë describes, “I’ve always felt very in touch with my masculine side, and that’s something that brand has always embraced. So to me, that’s really cool and sexy.”

The actress who parted ways with ex-husband Karl Glusman eighteen months after the two got married at Lenny Kravitz’s Parisian townhouse called him an ‘incredible human being’. Their divorce was finalized in August 2021 and she mentioned that pandemic helped her to reflect upon herself and her relationship after which her life changed. She explained, “It was a gift, just taking the time.”

Without giving any more details about what reflection she did while isolating and what lead to the divorce, Zoë simply added, Karl’s an incredible human being. It really is less about him and more about me learning how to ask myself questions about who I am and still learning who I am, and that being okay. That’s the journey I’m on right now.”

Sharing further the actress mentioned that she would never like to revisit her twenties as she described that she was a mess. Zoë Kravitz further explained, “I wasn’t making choices based on what felt good to me. Now we’re in an era of, What do I actually want? The good spot right now is taking a minute to say, ‘Maybe I should do this differently,’ and see what that feels like.” Zoë Kravitz stopped using Instagram in late 2021 and removed all of her pictures from social media after the MET GALA where she appeared in a stunning Saint Laurent sheer metal mesh gown but post the event was trolled by people stating that she showed too much flesh. The actress replied to the troll, “Being uncomfortable with the human body is colonization/brainwashing. It’s just a body. We all got em.”

During the interview, talking about the same she explained, “The fact that people don’t think what they say affects a celebrity because you’re not a person to them is crazy. I’m a human being. I want to fucking defend myself.” Explaining the move where she removed her pictures Zoë said, “The fact that I’m like, ‘Should I have not worn that?’ No, I do what I want to do, and I make what I want to make, and if I’m now starting to be afraid of what other people are going to say or think, I’m no longer doing my job as an artist. I’m not experiencing the world and putting that into art. I’m walking on eggshells. Fuck that. So, I needed to take a minute.”

She named Donald Glover, Ramy Youssef, and Alicia Keys as her confidants, and Alicia Keys added, “Something we talk about is understanding the pure value of who we are as women. We remind each other that we are special, powerful, and important. Her trajectory is incomparable, and it’s effortless in this beautiful way. She’s completely that embodiment of creative freedom. Whatever she does is natural, honest, pure. She’s the definition of a true artist.”

Zoë reveals that writing has helped her to keep her emotions in check and process them. She is currently writing, recording her solo album with Jack Antonoff, and describes it as, “It feels vulnerable, and it’s a little scary, but making music makes me happy.”
