Shakira and Gerard Piqué called it quits after 12 years of togetherness.
The Colombian singer and the football player have decided to part ways after eleven years of togetherness and sharing two young sons, Sasha and Milan. The couple released a joint statement via Shakira’s public relations firm on June 4th to confirm their split, and the statement said that they regret to inform you that they are separating and, for the well-being of their children, who are their highest priority, they requested privacy.
Spanish news outlet El Periodico reported that Gerard Piqué was living separately from Shakira and their sons, and then the news was confirmed. There was no specific cause given for the separation but there have been rumors about alleged cheating but Gerard Piqué is yet to comment on the situation but till then according to reports he has been enjoying his time with his pals and team-mate Riqui Puig.
Shakira and Gerard Piqué met in March 2011 while shooting for Shakira’s music video for the World Cup anthem "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" and Gerard Piqué made an appearance in the video along with other players. Shakira, in her 60-minute interview back in 2020, revealed that she was not a soccer fan and had no idea who he was, but when she saw the video she found Gerard Piqué cute, and then someone introduced the former couple.
Gerard Piqué, on his part, shared in 2016 with Spain’s TV3 that he was equally smitten by Shakira and he wrote to her. She was already there in South Africa because she sang for the opening ceremony and he asked her what the weather was like. Gerard Piqué admitted that it was a stupid question to ask someone, but Shakira started telling him what the weather was like every minute, and Gerard Piqué added that it got to a point where he told her that his team had to get to the World Cup finale to see her again as she was going to sign at the final too.
The former couple confirmed their relationship in 2011 and Shakira in 2013 told Elle that God’s existence can be proven only through love and explained that she had lost faith for a while and was becoming agnostic and started to feel like how love should feel and then she met Gerard Piqué and added that the sun came out for her. She confirmed her relationship with Gerard Piqué by posting a picture of the two on Twitter and Facebook with the caption "Les presento a mi sol" (I present to you my sun).
Shakira and Gerard Piqué made their red-carpet debut at the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or Awards gala in Switzerland. The couple welcomed their sons, Milan Piqué Mebarak, in 2013 and Sasha Piqué Mebarak, in 2015. In 2018, Shakira won the best Latin Pop Album award at the 60th Grammy Awards and she celebrated her victory with Gerard as they jumped on a trampoline while singing "Me Enamore," which documents how the former couple met and fell in love.
Gerard Piqué announced his retirement from professional football in 2018 and Shakira dedicated a post to appreciating her man with a heartfelt caption that stated that one of the happiest moments of her life was to witness him win in 2010 with the national team and celebrate with the Spanish Champions. In 2019, Shakira opened up about her depression after she suffered a hemorrhage to her right vocal cord in 2017 and mentioned that losing her voice and inability to sing was unbearable and added that the couple had a rough time as Gerard Piqué saw her at her lowest and when she was pessimistic and a bitter person to be around.
In 2014, Shakira told Latina magazine that Gerard is with her because he wants to be with Shakira the person, not the star. There is genuine affection; there are no hidden agendas. She added that she is with him because he's the most incredible man she has ever met and added that they both have similar desires, enjoy similar things, and despise similar things. Shakira added at the time that she has never been in a relationship with someone so enthusiastic about what they do. In 2017, there were speculations that the pair were breaking up, but they were short sighted on a trip, which put an end to the allegations.
During an interview with CBS news magazine 60 Minutes in 2020, Shakira and Gerard Piqué sat down to discuss why she has resisted getting married to him, to which she explained that marriage scares the shit out of her and she would rather want him to see her as his girlfriend and lover, and recently she shared that they fight over punctuality. Shakira said that as an athlete, Gerard Piqué’s mind is structured like that, but she had to work her way around it. She added that she has become a lot more punctual, but at times they do fight over it.
Shakira rushed to social media to explain one small detail after receiving several comments about being spotted in an ambulance in Barcelona. She added that the photos were taken last weekend when her father suffered a serious fall and she accompanied him to the hospital in an ambulance. The musician went on to say that he is currently healing but that everyone should offer him their best wishes for a swift recovery.
