Having your favorite series end is the saddest thing in the world, right? But the great part is that when good series end, they pave the way forward for even better reboots, spinoffs, and reunions, and that is great, too.

Just recently, a great, blood-chilling series, Dexter: New Blood, came to its end. Sadly, while the executive producer, Clyde Phillips, is all set for a series spin-off, there are no immediate plans for the killer series to expand further.

Dexter: New Blood is an anti-hero series, just like the very popular Netflix show 'You.' Following on a similar plotline, the murderous series follows the life of Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, who ends up falling in his own trap. The character is killed by his long-lost son, Harrison, played by Jack Alcott, while Dexter was hiding in Iron Lake. The chilling point, of course, was Dexter saying, "I died so you can live," as Harrison drives away from the location.

So, will the Dexter creators come forward to give Harrison his own murderous series to command any time soon? Clyde Phillips talked with Entertainment Weekly and discussed the finale of the bloody series and talked about the future of Harrison, and a potential spinoff.

As Clyde Phillips was always of the mind to kill Dexter off, doing it too soon must have ended the series too quickly, just in season 4. And yet, for the time period when the producer walked off, the series continued on, and then Dexter's story could finally mature to reach its ultimate end. Phillips said, "I had said previously about the end of season eight, yes. Had I been in charge of the show and had I done that, we wouldn't be talking now. Thank God I wasn't there, and Thank God they didn't do it because I had an amazing couple of years doing this."

Dexter being killed by Harrison, in the end, is a finale a bit too dark for many people. But the producer believes that there is no one else who would have fit the role, anyway. Needless to say, Dexter was already destined to die, and the creators just needed the right person to do it, which turned out to be Harrison.

"It was at the beginning of July of 2019 when I spoke with him," said the producer about meeting Michael C. Hall. "I believe that we did discuss that he would die, and there was really only one way for him to die. There was nobody else, really. I think it would've been unsatisfying if anybody else killed Dexter," he added.

When the series came back on, there was also the matter of recruiting Jennifer Carpenter for the finale, along with David Zayas. Shooting without Jennifer was definitely a no-go for the creators. The executive producer revealed, "We definitely wanted Jennifer. David's character, Angel Batista, grew out of the writers' room when everybody saw them sitting around talking about what's best for the story."

The series then turned into a darker web of things as the episodes turned more bloody one after another. One of the most gruesome scenes to be shown in the series, of course, has to be the underground lair. Phillips agrees as he shared, "The Clancy Brown character, Kurt Caldwell, grew and grew until we had one of the most gruesome and brutal scenes I've ever done. I'm talking about his underground lair with all of the women's bodies preserved forever. I've never seen that before."

The slow deterioration of the episodes made Dexter who he became in the end. While, initially, the 'hero' only ever punished the bad guys, soon it was revealed that Dexter was actually the 'antihero,' and he had no conscience when it came to hurting the good people either.

Sharing this one time when Dexter killed Alano Miller's character, Logan, producer Phillips said that "It was organic to the story."

He added, "Dexter had to get out of the police station. He was in a lot of trouble. Dexter cleverly set it up, so he got Angela Bishop ( played by Julia Jones) out of the police station because of her missing persons' situation. That left him alone with Logan. Logan was the last obstacle for him to get out of there."

Now that the long-running series has finally come to its end, fans want to know if Harrison will have his own series and if there is hope for a new spin-off. The executive producer, Clyde Phillips, admitted, "I am open to the possibility. I've been with Showtime forever. I did the first four seasons of Dexter and the last three seasons of Nurse Jackie. Showtime is family. I'm open to the possibility if they wanna pursue it, but there are no plans at the moment for that."

Even though Jack Alcott, the Harrison actor, did everything he needed to do for the series, he does not seem to be too eager to head on for the spinoff, too. Phillips gushed, "Jack Alcott is a great actor. He took wrestling lessons. He took baseball lessons. He took chopping wood lessons, fighting lessons. He was a great spirit. We had to shoot out of order because we had to chase the weather. We always needed snow." "By the time it was over, Jack was ready to play the end of the series," he revealed.
