The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday. In a virtual event, JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero revealed the nominations. Even though Steve Martin and Martin Short were nominated under the category of lead actor in a comedy series for their exceptional and impressive work on Only Murders in the Building, their partner in crime, Selena Gomez, was snubbed by the Academy.

Steve Martin and Martin Short recently spoke to The New York Times and shared that the entire team of Only Murders in the Building were thrilled at the nominations, not only for the actors but for the show and the recognization it has achieved in such a little time, but at the same time, they were dismayed that Selena Gomez, who also plays the lead character alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, was not nominated. Steve said that Selena Gomez is crucial to their performances and it would have been nice if she would have received the recognization for her acting.

But Steve Martin pointed out that even though Selena Gomez did not make it to the nominations for her incredible acting as Mabel Mora on-screen, the actress, who is also the executive producer of the show, was nominated as an executive producer. On the show, Steve Martin plays Charles Haden Savage and Martin Short plays Oliver Putnam, and when the nominations were announced, Steve Martin told Entertainment Tonight that the entire team was overjoyed.

He further said that the team loves that their crucial partner, Selena Gomez, is nominated as a producer in the Best Comedy Series category. With Selena Gomez being nominated as a producer under the category of Best Comedy Series, it marks the second time a Latina has been nominated or honored as a producer in an Emmy-nominated comedy series in the 74-year Emmy history, as Salma Hayek was the first one to achieve that title for 2007’s release of "Ugly Betty". Only one Latina woman, Celia D. Costas, won as a producer in the top series categories for Angels in America in 2004.

John Hoffman, executive producer and co-creator of Only Murders in the Building, also shared that the trio on the show is the heart of everything and the reason for the success of the show, and all three of them, with Selena Gomez being an essential part of it, have made the show what it is. John further added that he knows that everyone feels bad about it, but at the same time, all of the nominations for Only Murders in the Building are hers as well.

The co-creator of the show explained that nominations are tricky and one might never know who is going to be included, and because of that, it could seem a little unfair to a lot of people, and added that everyone is proud of her and they all will be celebrating together.

Only Murders in the Building earned a total of 17 nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Steve Martin and Martin Short under the category of the lead actor in a comedy, and the show is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. The series has been renewed for a third season while season two is streaming on Hulu.

In 1969, Steve Martin received an Emmy for his writing on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," and throughout the years, Martin Short has also won two Emmys, including one in 1983 for his work on "SCTV." The duo has been nominated previously as well for work that included the Academy Awards which Steve Martin has hosted and had written for, the FX drama "Damages" on which Martin Short played the evil right-hand man to a Bernie Madoff-like character, and their 2018 variety special "Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life," they had been nominated for nearly two dozen Primetime Emmys combined. Martin Short was nominated for a Daytime Emmy as well.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to take place on September 12, 2022, in Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre.

Congratulations to the team of Only Murders in the Building!
