The news of Emily VanCamp's departure from medical drama, 'The Resident' had been circulating for some time, but nothing could have prepared her fans for her heartbreaking parting from the program. In Season 5, Episode 3, 'The Long and Winding Road,' the actress famed for her role as Sharon Carter in Marvel Universe movies made her farewell appearance as nurse practitioner Nic Nevin in the medical drama.

In season 4, Emily's character Nic Nevin gave birth to Georgina Grace Hawkins, her and Conrad's (husband played by Matt Czuchry) daughter. The actress was absent from the new season, but she did lend her voice to a phone call with her husband Conard, who reassured her that being at home alone with their kid while she was away at a spa retreat would be alright.

The police arrive at Conrad's door in episode 2 to deliver tragic news, and it is revealed in episode 3 that Nic was engaged in a vehicle accident on her way home and did not survive the head injury. Conrad is attempting to make sense of the absolutely stupid and unexplained event that claimed his love. After it is declared that Nic is brain dead and her husband had pulled the plug, her organs were donated and she even made it possible for a patient suffering from long-term COVID symptoms to receive a trachea transplant.

Co-show runner Peter Elkoff mentioned, "Can you imagine, for the great diagnostician Conrad Hawkins, a more emotionally trying circumstance than trying to diagnose an accident that makes no sense? We felt it was the most creative way to tell that story." Matt shared that he was the first one to know that Emily wanted to start a family and leave. 'Gilmore Girls' alum also shared that he was supportive to her and her decision and she will always be a part of his life.

Emily VanCamp, who is adored by her fans, paid respect to her cast, producers, and writers, as well as her time on 'The Resident,' with a movie video created by FOX depicting Nic's final moments on the program. She wrote, “Thank you so much for four beautiful years! Feeling so much gratitude for the relationships I've gained, the stories I've had the opportunity to tell, and the many lessons I've learned from playing Nic Nevin on The Resident. Thank you to everyone who came on this journey with this wonderful character and me. Thank you to the most incredible cast and crew in television- I already miss you so much. To our writers and producers- collaborating with you over the past four years has been so rewarding, and I appreciate you all so much. Thank you for putting this lovely tribute together @foxtv I truly hope you all keep tuning in as I know there are still so many incredible stories to be told here.”

The caption continued, "And mostly- thank you to all the nurses out there working tirelessly for your patients. Your patience, grit, and dedication inspired this character, and I'm honored to have played a very small part in telling your stories. Sending you all so much love and thanks."

When asked about her decision to leave the show, the actress said it was "bittersweet" but "the right decision." Emily went on to say that she had a great time working on the program for four years and that she and the crew have nothing but love and respect for each other. She also expressed her gratitude for the understanding and compassion with which her choice to depart was met.

Emily went on to say that her character Nic Nevin was leaving the program with a "quite the legacy," and that the finale was fitting for her. Emily's exit from the show was announced just a few days after she gave birth to her daughter Iris with husband Josh Bowman.

The actress mentioned that her husband played a huge role in her decision to leave the show. Explaining this, the actress said, "I spent so many years on network television, but then suddenly priorities shifted. I think there comes a moment in every woman's life—in every person's life—where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that's what happened while I was making the show. Doing that many episodes in a different city, and then you add COVID to that, most of us couldn't see our families for almost a year. It really solidified for me that family is where my heart is at the moment."

In terms of her work, the actress is looking forward to new prospects. She was last seen as Agent Sharon Carter in Disney's 'Falcon and The Winter Soldier,' and the series' conclusion implied that Sharon would play a significant role in the MCU moving forward. It's unclear whether Emily VanCamp will reprise her role as Nic Nevin in 'The Resident' in the future, but fans should expect to see her in flashbacks if there are any. Emily has stated that she would love to return to the show because she already misses the cast.

According to the actress,"I would be absolutely open to going back in some form or another. But it really depends on what we expect for the show and for them. But I'd always love to go back and see everyone. I miss them terribly."
