The pandemic delayed the masterpiece of cinema that The Crown is to come forward with its fifth season, but now the season is finally in sight. As expected, the Season 5 of the show will feature plenty of royal tea and a royal revenge dress!

The fourth season of the show debuted Emma Corrin as the young Diana Spencer, who was all set to descend on the path of love and soon became the most loved princess of her times. The young princess has far-fetched dreams about her marriage with Prince Charles, but everything comes tumbling down as their marriage faces some of the worst issues for a married couple. But the season ends as tensions run all-time high.

However, fans already know that the royal couple calls off their marriage soon, and the former Princess turns her attention to full-time humanitarian work, aided by her celebrity status. But as the Princess ascends success with ardent passion each day, her beautiful life is cut short by a tragic accident. The show has managed to keep the much-known life of Princess Diana interesting and captivating, to say the least. While the two seasons before the latest installment were positively shocking, the fifth season is prophesied to set the bar at an all-time high.

While the season will not air until 2022, it is a consoling fact that the year is only a month away. Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix actress Imelda Staunton, who played Dolores Umbridge, will get to play The Queen along with Elizabeth Debicki, who is to hold on the helm for Princess Diana.

Here is everything about the fifth season of The Crown and more on that 'revenge dress' that has taken the internet by storm.

The Revenge Dress

Lady Diana made headlines for an assortment of reasons, but nothing got the pie as her 'revenge dress' did. With its wide popularity over the years, it was only fair the series featured its own revenge dress episode. Hence, this past Friday on November 5, Elizabeth Debicki, the actress who gets to portray Diana, was seen wearing the 'revenge dress.'

Originally the LBD was worn by Lady Diana in 1994 when attending the Vanity Fair dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Fatedly, the evening of the dinner was the night when Prince Charles went on air admitting that he had cheated on his former wife with Camilla Parker. The Jonathan Dimbleby documentary interview soon became the talk of the country in mere minutes.

However, the Princess had first bought the dress back in 1991 when she was still a Royal Princess but never got to wear it as the Royal protocol states that the ladies of the family can not wear off-the-shoulder dresses. But the day she actually wore it, the dress came to be known as her 'revenge dress' for rebelling against the Royal protocol, family, and of course, worn as a symbol of vengeance against Prince Charles himself. The intense media frenzy upon the Prince's admission, along with the strikingly bold dress, was soon perceived as Diana's way to rise above the conflict of her former family.

The actress, Debicki, looks remarkably similar to the late Princess of Wales in the show's version of the 'revenge dress.' The black dress is a complete replica of the 1994 dress, which was a Stambolian silk crepe cocktail dress. The resemblance was made complete down right to her hair and the jewelry that the princess wore on that fateful day.

Apparently, Diana's former stylist, Anna Harvey, shared that Diana knew that her ex-husband's admission to adultery was set to air that night for the whole country to hear. Hence, the People Princess "wanted to look like a million dollars." The sapphire and diamond brooch that the princess wore that day was a wedding gift that she had received from the Queen Mother, the mother of Queen Elizabeth II. A similar brooch is seen worn by Debicki in the photos from the set of season 5 of the series. In fact, the set photos were taken at the gallery in Hyde Park, which is nearby the Kensington Palace.

The show will also recreate the iconic Lady Di and Martin Bashir interview from 1995. The interview featured Lady Diana opening about her relationship with Prince Charles and his adultery affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The famous Panorama interview debuted with the Princess saying, "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

Of course, such a massive statement on Lady Di's part was to throw the royal family into tumult. The controversy generated by the interview was then made into a full-blown investigation at the end of 2020. Led by Prince William, the investigation was dubbed as a "step in the right direction." In May 2021 the investigation led to Basir leaving the public broadcasting service under the accusations that the interview was sourced by him under "deceptive tactics."

After her failed marriage with Prince Charles, Princess Diana started dating Dodi Fayed, the Harrods heir. The two were together only for a brief time when their romance was cut short with their death due to the fatal car accident. The lover will also make an appearance in the series and is to be portrayed by Khalid Abdalla from The Kite Runner.

Peter Morgan, the series maker, said, "I'm absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman."

The Harry Potter actress herself said in her statement, "I have loved watching The Crown from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan's scripts. I am genuinely honored to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion."
