Netflix’s television series based on the award-winning play 'The audience' has reigned this year at the 2021 Emmy Awards, winning a mind-boggling total number of 7 awards. The 73rd edition of the American award show was a big night for the lavish British drama 'The Crown' as it tied with Disney’s live-action television show The Mandalorian for the most nominations with a total of 24.

The 73rd edition of the Emmy Awards took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles, being hosted by comedian Cedric. The three-hour-long broadcast of the award show had a total of 28 live awards.

The American streaming giant Netflix led the Emmy Award with 44 awards in total. The Crown won the award for Outstanding drama series beating its rivals The Boys, Bridgeton, The Mandalorian, Pose, Lovecraft Country, This Is Us and The Handmaid’s Tale. Star Josh O’ Connor won the award for the best actor in a drama series against Bridgerton actor Rege-Jean Page, This Is Us actor Sterling K Brown, Lovecraft Country actor Jonathan Majors, pose actor Billy Porter and Perry Mason’s Matthew Rhys with his co-stars Olivia Colman winning the award for best actress in drama series beating The Handmaid’s Tale actress Elisabeth Moss, Pose actress Mj Rodriguez, Lovecraft Country’s actress Jurnee Smollett, In Treatment actress Uzo Aduba and her co-star Emma Corrin. British actor Tobias Menzies with his co-star Gillan Andreson also won the awards for the best actor and actress in supporting role in a drama series respectively, for their brilliant performance in The Crown.

Director Jessica Hobbs and writer Peter Morgan from The Crown series also received the awards for the best director and the best writer for a drama series respectively, against fellow directors Julie Anne Robinson, Benjamin Caron, Liz Garbus, Jon Favreau, Steven Canals, and against film writers Rebecca Sonnenshine from The Boys, “What I Know”. Yahlin Chang from The Handmaid’s Tale, “Home”, Misha Green form Lovecraft Country, “Shutdown,” Dave Filoni from The Mandalorian, “Chapter 13: The Jedi” and Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Steven Canals, Janet Mock, and Our Lady J (Pose, Series Finale”). The best actress in a drama series was also awarded to The Crown star Claire Foy for her absolutely mind-blowing performance as a guest actress in the show.

Prior to this year’s nomination at the Emmys Award, the streaming service Netflix from 2013 to 2020 earned a total of 30 nominations in categories such as best drama and comedy.

The lead actress Olivia Colman after winning the award for best actress in a drama series, shared her excitement at the London gathering. She said, “I would have put money on that not happening,” Olivia Colman said. “I want to say thank you very much for this, this is amazing.” She added saying, “I loved every second of it, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.” Olivia further added, “I wish my dad was here to see this. I lost my daddy during Covid, and he would have loved all of this.”
