Actress Cameron Diaz is opening up about her time in the industry!

During an interview with Michelle Visage’s "Rule Breakers" podcast, the actress spoke about the sexism she faced while working and how she simply laughed it off because laughing at it helped her get through her career.

The actress who decided to stay away from movies now mentioned that the #MeToo movement could have helped her to stand up and speak up about the things like sexism and misogyny she had to face during her early days of working roughly in the ‘90s and ‘00s.

Cameron shared with Michelle that she took up roles in Shrek and Charlie’s Angels because those roles were working towards changing the narrative of women for the people, while she admitted that she was not brave enough back then to speak up for herself or her co-stars either. She went on to say that there was "heavy misogyny," "exploitation," and "just plain lying on the entire industry" at the time.

Further, the host, Michelle Visage, added that she would laugh it off at the sexism in the industry, to which Cameron added that it was the normal thing to do and just get through their careers. She went on to clarify that things now have changed for the better as compared to how things were at the time when people would just participate to make everybody feel comfortable but not be the victim in that position.

Cameron Diaz, who rose to fame with Charlie’s Angels, shared that the fame she earned made her feel like a child because she was not able to do anything for herself, referring to speaking up. She went on to explain that fame is infantilizing as people would treat you like a queen and you would think that you can’t do everything but everything should be done for you, which ends up making one’s sense of authority. Adding to that, she said it also takes away the ability to take care of oneself.

In 2021, Cameron Diaz explained why she had decided to retire from movies in 2018 and focus on managing her life as she appeared on Kevin Hart’s talk show "Hart to Heart." She explained that when an individual keeps doing something for a long time, they are not just the person. They are delivering on this one thing, and when the time feels right, it has to be passed onto other people.

The actress mentioned that she loves acting and she could go forever, but sometimes she feels like she has this unlimited energy and inertia and when she looked around, she could see a part of her life that she was touching upon or managing, so she decided to take a step back to incorporate more simplicity into her life. She also shared with Gwyneth Paltrow in a 2020 interview that she found peace in her soul now that she had stopped acting because the pressure was massive.

During the podcats, she also talked about how she never washes her face, and if lucky, twice a month. She explained that it’s hard not to judge oneself after looking at yourself in the mirror and against the other markers of beauty, but she admitted that sitting in front of the mirror for hours became toxic for her.

Cameron Diaz added that now she just does not care about her looks anymore and not washing her face is kind of part of it. She added that she is not in that place where she would put her energy into applying thousands of beauty products to her face. She is focusing on looking and staying strong and healthy.
