Pedro Pascal has no hard feelings about how his character died in Game of Thrones.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Pedro Pascal, who portrayed the character of Oberyn Martell in HBO’s successful show "Game of Thrones," said that he appreciates that his character’s death on the show is still considered one of the most iconic deaths on a TV show.

During the interview, Pedro shared that the death sequence made him feel like a boss and added that if his character’s death is one of the top three iconic deaths, then everything after is a bit futile. Oberyn Martell was squeezed in season four until his head was busted open during a duel against the Mountain (Ser Gregor Cleghane) who was played by actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.

Pedro Pascal had shared in a previous interview that the helicopter kicks that made the audience go gaga during the fight was performed by stunt fighter Liang Yang but Pedro did learn the fight choreography for the battle against the Mountain. Liang Yang has now gone on to work on the Star Wars movies.

Pedro Pascal shared during the interview that there was a chance that he could not have been a part of Game Of Thrones because the showrunner and series co-creator David Benioff had called his audition "amateurish." While talking about it, the Narcos actor shared that the makers sent him about twenty pages to do, which he said was at the time that they wanted the tape to be turned in. Pedro Pascal added that he had no way of memorizing all those lines, so the easiest thing he could do was set up his phone in front of him and then just kind of read the lines from the pages. Pedro joked that they fell for it and it was not his fault.

The Mandalorian actor added that he feels grateful that he was a part of Game of Thrones and that it was an ideal experience to get to play an iconic character that was beautifully written. He added that he had the time of his life and he wouldn’t be sitting here for the interview if it were not for Oberyn Martell. The actor shared that while shooting for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent in Dubrovnik, he got to revisit the arena where his skull was crushed around the same time of year, and it was like a full circle for him.

Earlier, David Benioff shared that they never doubted their idea of killing off Oberyn Martell and explained that they all love Pedro Pascal and his character, but his death at the hands of the Mountain during a duel was one of their favorite brutal killings from author George R.R. Martin’s books. David added that one of the reasons people remember Oberyn Martell is because of the way he was killed, and later joked that if they had not killed him, Pedro Pascal would not have done Narcos, so things worked out.

Pedro Pascal, who will be seen in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent opposite Nicolas Cage, shared that the actor was amazing to work with and helped him remember how much one needs to care about their work and just brought out the best in him. Pedro added that there were various instances from the shoot where Nicolas would do something funny and unexpected yet so familiar that it was very special for him.

Pedro plays Javi, a crime boss and a crazy fan of Nicolas Cage, who plays himself in the movie, and Javi pays Nicolas $1 million to attend his birthday party. The movie comes out on April 22nd.
