Rebecca's illness brought together Kevin and Sophie for the second time; Credits: Entertainment weekly

This Is Us is steadily moving towards its final episodes. The latest episode of the show revealed the marriage partner of Kevin, played by Justin Hartley, though the audience did not get to see the couple walking down the aisle. 

Kevin finally came together with high school sweetheart Sophie, played by Alexandra Breckenridge. The two were a married couple prior to their subsequent relationship but had divorced earlier. 

They had their second chance at happiness when they met at Kate's second wedding, played by Chriss Metz. Their family and friends were extremely happy to see them finally coming together and finding each other. It is almost a given that the two would make their way down the aisle sometime in the near future. 

The credit for bringing them together could be given to Rebecca, the Alzheimer's affected mother of Kevin who had been with him through the years. Kevin's mother, played by Mandy Moore, had been the only shipper of the Sophie and Kevin relationship, even though she herself did not know what was going on considering her condition. 

She would randomly remind Kevin of Sophie at times and was constantly talking of her during the wedding. Her failed memory had made her think that Kevin was Jack, played by Milo Ventimiglia, and she was still thinking of Sophie as a young adult. Thinking that she was talking with Jack, Rebecca told Kevin how she thinks he and Sophie were perfect for each other but that they had met at the wrong time when they were younger. 

Hartley spoke with Variety about Rebecca's slow health downfall due to her Alzheimer's and how she has been facing an uphill battle during these last few episodes. The series is also showing Kevin taking after his father as he is now parenting Nick, and in turn, Nick imitates his father a lot too. 

Rebecca's condition has been pretty heartbreaking in this season but her children have come to deal with her episodes in their own different ways. Her condition causes painful sympathy in the hearts of the viewers, making them think about what they could have done if they were stuck in a similar situation with their parents. 

Kevin has been pretty trustworthy during the Alzheimer's episodes of his mother. Considering his character and his development through the entire series, it was improbable that the character must have shown so much responsibility and restraint when dealing with his sick mother. 

Earlier Kevin would have probably freaked out and not have known how to take care of her. He must have acted like he knows what he is doing with her, only to create a mess out of it. 

But now, to see him be so good at taking care of his mother is a proud moment for everyone who has walked through this journey with him. In fact, he has done a great job with her, better than his other siblings, and has finally learned to take care of people. 

He has fully grown into a responsible adult man who understands how to break things down and manage whatever is going on around you. Yet, he is also prone to his own emotional turmoil and though he looks all sturdy and strong now, there is a strong chance that he feels lonely and that the plight of his mother makes him tear up badly. 

Nevertheless, he is smart enough to let his moment of weakness show in front of his mother and he does not even point it out to her when she slips out of consciousness and enters into the later episodes. He is not taking any of it adversely on himself at least, which lets the audience actually see Rebecca in the spotlight instead of making it an extended part of Kevin himself. 

Kevin also understands that his mother is in need of superior care, and even if she mistakes him for Jack, he does not lash out or correct her. Rebecca is the person who took care of him as a child and he knows that now it is his turn to care for her and focus on the fact that she is not recognizing him at moments. 

Kevin is now living up to higher standards where he has developed into an honorable man who is secure in himself. He will unconditionally take care of his mother till she needs it and will neither free nor make a big deal out of it. 

And in turn, Rebecca has helped Kevin and Sophie figure out the mistakes that they made when they were younger and realize how they could actually work on their mistakes and come together once again. Though it is not a thing to rejoice within, even in illness, Rebecca has been working for the betterment of her children. 

Even when Rebecca is not in a full state of consciousness, she remembers the rights and the wrongs of her children and everything that could help them find good things in life. She remembered the particular relationship between Sophie and Kevin so that it stuck with her and her precious insight into their dynamics made the divorced couple realize some things. 

Yet, things are not always great in This Is Us. The three siblings of the family have not had the best of conditions when they were children and yet they have made something for themselves.

Of course, now that they are all grown up and have their own children, they would know what it is like to be parents and truly appreciate the sacrifices that their parents made for them.
