Downtown Abbey is coming back with a spinoff series, Downtown Abbey: A New Era; Credits: Time Out

Missed watching the amazing story of Downton Abbey? Well, there is good news for the fans of the show, because Downton Abbey is now finally coming back with a spinoff series!

The show will be released under the Focus Features and is slated to be released on May 20, 2022. Focus Features has already shared new art from the show. The spinoff movie is named Downtown Abbey: A New Era. 

The series will have two distinctive narrations during its run. Hence, the poster of Downton Abbey: A New Era features a split down the middle symbolizing the story of the residents of Downton Abbey itself and the other side focusing on the members that are away from home and gone abroad. 

The plot of the Downton Abbey film features Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess. The Countess inherits a sprawling villa somewhere in the South of France from a past relationship and a lover who chose to remain hidden. 

The family is very curious about the whole affair and the property. Hence, they set on a journey to look at the new villa they have acquired and see all of its glory. Along this path, they come across the past life of the Dowager Countess and uncover some of her secrets. 

But that is not where the fun stops for the Crawley family. They receive a lot more to see and engage in when they allow a film crew to use their estate. The film crew is eager to use the massive brilliance of the place to use as their sets and shoot a phenomenal film that is set in the 1920s. 

The Downtown estate will be perfect for the occasion, with Mary Crawley being one of the actresses who might get to appear on the silver screen cinema to be shot as the estate. The character is played by Michelle Dockery. 

On the other hand, the family head Robert Crawley wishes to embark on a journey to the south of France. He hopes to reveal more secrets about the past of the Dowager Countess along with having time off and fun vacation. Robert Crawley will be joined on the journey by his daughter Edith and wife Cora. 

Hence, a lot is happening in Downton Abbey and there is a lot for the characters on their plates. But to add to the turmoil of the hour, the original plot of the movie had shown the king and the queen coming to visit Downton Abbey. While the royalty visiting was a big deal, the entire film crew getting ready to stay at Downton Abbey looks much more chaotic. 

The Dowager Countess will also make way to her place around this time. Hugh Bonneville will come back to the film and reprise his role as Lord Grantham, who will allow his daughter Lady Mary to take over the control of the film's production. Lady Edith will move forward to find her own thing in life. 

The trailer for the new spinoff film, Downton Abbey: A New Era has been released by Focus Features. It reveals that the new series will be welcoming back many actors from the previous show who will get to reprise their beloved roles. 

Others will be taking over the new characters that will be featured on the show and portraying their distinctive properties with their spectacular talents. Apart from Michelle Dockery and Smith, the film will also star Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Elizabeth McGovern, and Hugh Dancy.

Others to star in the movie are  Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Michael Fox, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Lesley Nicol, Douglas Reith, Penelope Wilton, Laura Haddock, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West, and Jonathan Zaccaï.

Downton Abbey was a hit show back in the time and rose to success almost instantly after its release in 2010. The audience base only grew with time, giving way to the formation of a massive fandom. 

The original story was based in 1912 and focused on the Crawley family after the heir to a gigantic estate dies on the Titanic after the ship sank. The passing of the estate to a new generation brings on many difficulties and everything goes into utter chaos as a middle-class family wins over the inheritance of the estate. 

The series revolves around the family relationships of the Crawleys and how they get accustomed to the new estate that they just inherited. Needless to say, getting to live in a gorgeous palace after coming from a middle-class narrative makes the family face extreme differences when it comes to the living conditions of the rich and the poor.

Apart from the family struggles and hardships, Downton Abbey also sheds light on the major world events back in the day, including World War I and the 1918 flu pandemic. 

The newest spinoff movie in the franchise, Downton Abbey: A New Era, is helmed by director Simon Curtis. The film debuted a write-up by the show creator Julian Fellowes and is produced by Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge, and Julian Fellowes.
