Model Bella Hadid is getting candid about going back to the people who have abused her in the past because of her ‘people pleasing’ characteristic.

Recently, Bella Hadid during a Victoria’s Secret’s ‘VS Voices’ podcast got candid about settling for abusive relationships in her life and shared, “I constantly went back to men – and also, women – that had abused me and that’s where the people-pleasing came in. I started not having boundaries, not only sexually, physically, emotionally, but then it went into my workspace. I began to be a people-pleaser with my job.”

Daughter of famous parents, Mohamed Hadid and Yolanda Hadid, Bella Hadid mentioned that for the longest she felt like her voice was never heard and always felt that her voice was less important. She recalled, “I always felt like my voice was never heard growing up. I grew up around men – whether that was in relationships or family or whatever that was – where I was constantly told that my voice was less important than their voice.”

Talking about her relationships Bella mentioned, "Then, moving into relationships growing up and not having the boundaries of being able to stick up for myself and have my voice heard affected me in my adult relationships very intensely, where my nervous system would crash. It was fight or flight. Either I would become silent and cry and go inward, or I would lash out and leave." She did not mention any context of the relationship she addressed while sharing that either she would shut up or fight.

But now, the model shared that the help of therapy, social media breaks, meditation, and surrounding oneself with positive people around has helped her to cope and speak for herself. Bella continued, "Now I'm able to open up and speak my mind, especially within my relationships and within my family.” Bella Hadid specifically mentioned that her decision to take social media breaks has helped her the most and she added, “It sounds very cliche, but do not have the energy of everyone else and their projections being projected back onto you is one of the most powerful things of all time. It’s a cliché for a reason because it’s a fact that it works.”

Bella has been vocal about her mental health struggles and recently opened up about her challenges with alcohol too. In her interview with InStyle, she said, “I have done my fair share of drinking. I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out that I felt like I wouldn’t be able to control myself”. She later shared that it was really hard for her to pick a glass of alcohol after she found out how much damage the alcohol has already done to her brain and she has been six months sober now.

Bella lastly added, “I don’t feel the need [to drink anymore] because I know how it will affect me at 3 in the morning when I wake up with horrible anxiety thinking about that one thing I said five years ago when I graduated high school. There’s just this never-ending effect of, essentially, you know, pain and stress over those few drinks that didn’t really do much, you know?”

Bella Hadid’s step towards putting an end to going back to people who abused her can be seen as a step towards better and brighter days for the model. The industry she has been a part of is crucial and demands a lot but taking breaks for oneself and keeping a check on one’s mental health at regular intervals is the way to make it in life. A lot of young girls who aspire to be a supermodel like Bella Hadid would see this as a sign of an empowered, successful, and strong woman and that’s an example Bella Hadid would love to set.
